Boris Johnson pulled the UK out of Erasmus in 2020 as an act of ideological spite, ripping away opportunities for pupils, apprentices, teachers and young people to satisfy a narrow obsession with cutting ties to Europe. The noise now is cynical, with Brexit diehards feigning outrage about cost only because Britain is rejoining an EU scheme.
Rejoining is a straightforward gain, because the money comes back through skills, jobs and local spending, and because Erasmus spreads opportunity far beyond universities, strengthening the economy in the process.
