Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Occupation: Celebrity chef
Met several fishermen to source fish for his show. They told him about the wasteful practice of throwing countless tonnes of perfectly good fish back into the sea because of EU quotas.
What he did about it: Set up a campaign called Hugh's Fish Fight, got 870,000+ people to sign his petition against discards. As a result of this direct action campaign the EU got rid of the discards policy.
Nigel Farage
Occupation: Politician (allegedly)
Used the plight of British fishermen and the wasteful practice of discarding perfectly good fish to blast the EU and propagandise for UKIP in a party political broadcast.
What he did about it: Was a member of the EU fisheries committee (which has the power to table amendments to existing EU laws) but only bothered to turn up to 1 meeting out of 42!
